This urban legend generated many similar stories long before the 1980's. I grew up on older versions of these stories in the 50's and 60's and they were newer versions even then. And "Old Lady Irvine” was much scarier in the older tales. It amazes me that this legend has sustained its momentum for so many years, even though it has morphed into new, and somewhat benign versions of the original (what ever it may have been.)
